Kerri Shadid - Artist in Residence

Skirvin Hilton Artist in Residence

The Skirvin Hilton in partnership with the Paseo Arts Association has chosen Kerri Shadid as its featured Artist in Residence.

As the Skirvin Hilton's Artist in Residence, Kerri's live studio space is open to hotel guests and visitors. The Artist-in-Residence program encourages the public to interact with Oklahoma artists and witness the evolution of each art piece first-hand, while supporting the artists' work and talent.

Kerri is a fulltime poet and visual artist as she writes spontaneous poems for visitors at events and festivals. Kerri also practices process oriented art forms such as marbling, handmade books and book binding. As one of our featured Oklahoma City artists, Kerri hopes to expand the complexity of her hand made books. This includes Japanese Stab and multi-folio binding, each of which are visually engaging and rarely practiced.

Kerri makes art to free life from the fear of death and is in love with existence and attempting to make peace with non-existence. Art has taught Kerri how to accept, even embrace, our absurd human condition. Her work contains elements of magical realism, the surreal, and wabi sabi, a Japanese tradition celebrating the transient and flawed. This is most evident in her performance art, Poetry Stand, where she writes spontaneous, whimsical poems for the public. In her visual art Kerri paints with words. The aesthetics of words and voice are key in her work, how language and poetry make our existence artistic. The themes in her work are often philosophical or psychological, tiny revelations toward awakening.

Kerri received BAs in Letters and Political Science from the University of Oklahoma, studied international relations as a Fulbright Grant Student at McGill University in Montreal and received her MA in the Humanities and Social Thought from New York University.
